On our short stopover in Canberra, we had the chance to try out one of the most popular vegan places, the Sweet Bones Cafe.
The Location and atmosphere
For us as visitors, the location of the restaurant in Lonsdale Street was excellent, especially for outdoor lovers. Close to the Sweet Bones Cafe you will find several stores that sell everything from backpacks and camping equipment to technical clothes. It seems that the location is also convenient for some businesses because we saw a lot of traffic with people dressed for the office.
The café has a really cute outside area with several smaller tables. Unfortunately for us, there was too much shade and it was too cold to sit outside. The inside area is designed in a simple but very trendy way. The ten tables offer a comfortable space to spend some time working on your laptop or just enjoying your food.
The Menu
When we had a look at the options offered by the Sweet Bones, it was really difficult to choose what to try. If you go early and are nearly starving, go for the Big Breakfast that includes vegan eggs amongst a lot of other things. A less traditional option would be the breakfast burrito, but since we came for lunch we were looking for other options.
There are generally three main sections you can choose from for lunch: sandwiches, burgers and salads.
We shared the Tempeh Bacon Melt Sandwich with tempeh bacon, coconut cheese, mushroom slices and caramelized onions as main ingredients. It was absolutely amazing and probably one of the best vegan meals we tried with a special taste we haven’t had before. Since we absolutely love vegan hamburgers, we had the Bacon and Cheese Burger. It comes with a tofu pattie, smoky coconut bacon, cheddar-like cheese, lettuce, tomato and pickles. It was a solid burger but didn’t have the special taste of the sandwich which made the Sweet Bones more memorable for us.
Deserts
I’m a chocolate and sweets fanatic, so I miss having all the options available to me. So it was a highlight that the cafe has several dessert options, one of them a hazelnut, almond, and chocolate brownie which was delicious and gone in two seconds. Other options were cookies, muffins and a cheesecake.
