There is hardly any food that is as essential to us during our travels than peanut butter. It is cheap, tasty and filling – not to mention all of its uses. We wouldn’t want to go camping or on a road trip without it.
Protein and other benefits
Not only does peanut butter allow travellers to eat cheap, it’s also quite healthy. It has protein and potassium which lowers the risk of high blood pressure, strokes and heart diseases. Additionally, it contains fibre which is good for your bowel health. The contained magnesium helps fortify your bones and muscles. Furthermore, it has Vitamin E, antioxidants and healthy fats. Being completely plant-based, peanut butter is one of our most important foods when travelling on a plant-based diet.
Uses
The most obvious use is peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. We sometimes have them right away for breakfast if we need energy in the morning. They are also perfect to prepare and pack in a sandwich bag for a snack or lunch.
A dish recommended to us and which we’ve now included in our camping favourites is pasta with peanut butter sauce. Since it’s a one-pot dish it’s perfect for the camping kitchen. Just boil the pasta in water and once it’s ready, strain the water but keep some in the pot to mix it with peanut butter. Stir until you have a creamy pasta mix.
One of our favourite Asian dishes is rice with satay sauce. To make the sauce, just mix water with peanut butter. If you have hoisin or soy sauce you can add that to the mix for a special taste. In case you want a cheap dish, just enjoy some rice with this sauce, but we recommend throwing at least some mushrooms and zucchini in the sauce.
