Our first vegan experience in New Zealand was in Dunedin. We checked the HappyCow! app to have a first impression about out options and the selection wasn’t too impressive. There were only four pure plant-based options of which, one was closed, two were too expensive and only one was good for budget travelers. However, after chatting with some local vegans we found out that most restaurants offer at least some plant-based options next to their meat dishes.
Potpourri – The Vegetarian Cafe
We found the Potpourri randomly on our way from the Octagon to the old train station. What lured us in was the sign of their famous vegan scones, something you don’t find everywhere. And we weren’t disappointed by this treat. Together with very tasty coffees, it was the perfect break during our sightseeing day. Apart from the scones, you can choose from a variety of baked goods and other vegan and vegetarian meals, like the lasagna or other daily dishes.
Let Them Eat Vegan
One of the best options for vegan travelers we have found so far was the “Let Them Eat Vegan” restaurant. Apart from the fresh dishes of the day they also offer their homemade vegan cheddar, mozzarella, and other cheese varieties or plant-based meat to take back to your hostel. For lunch, we had the vegan pie with ham, eggs and potatoes and the turkey cheese sandwich. Both dishes were big enough for one person and the taste was amazing. We took some cheddar cheese home to have for breakfast the next day and it was also excellent. The owners of the place were also super friendly and we had a chat with Tanya about the growing interest in plant-based solutions in the area. We will post more on this topic in the next weeks.
