However, there is much more to explore in this big country than Istanbul. In Turkeys southwest lies the Unesco World Heritage site Pamukkale. The travertine terraces and the well-preserved ruins of the Greek-Roman city of Hierapolis attract more than 2 million visitors per year. Enjoy a day or two exploring the area and bathing in the warm water pools. In high season you should book your accommodation in advance. We went in low season and could even pitch our tent in the garden of a hotel to save money.
Oludeniz & Kabak Valley
Home to a vast variety of sandy beaches and turquoise ocean Oludeniz is the perfect spot for a relaxing holiday. You can choose one of the many resorts if you want a bit of luxury, but you will also find cheap campsites directly by the water. If you want to escape the crowds a bit head by bus to the near Kabak Valley. From the main street, you have to get a ride with a 4×4 car to get to the campsites. It is a real paradise and because it is remote you will be able to really relax.
The history of this city dates back to the ancient Greek times. Therefore, Bodrum has a lot of history and variety of old sights. Highlights are the Castle of St. Peter and the ruins of the Mausoleum of Mausolus, one of the ancient wonders of the world.
Another of the seven wonders of the ancient world is Ephesus. Easily reachable by bus from Bodrum or Izmir it is also one of the main tourist attraction. Get lost in ancient times by wandering through the well-preserved streets. The most famous attractions are the Temple of Artemis and the Library of Celsus.
